Hickies Bar & Pier Restaurant, Kilkee

Restaurant & Bar refurbishment of family run boutique hotel, situated on the Wild Atlantic Way, Kilkee, Co.Clare

Hickies Bar

We set out to create a space that had much more visual synergy and to create a warmer more inviting interior. Renovations to the bar were mainly cosmetic. The existing cocktail bar lacked draw visually so we enhanced the existing features. We stripped back elements of clutter and added feature lighting and accessories. The aim was to create an inviting, destination cocktail bar that complimented the traditional main bar counter area.

Throughout the interior we used a colour palette and period pinstriped wallpaper as a backdrop. Each area has been given its unique setting via feature lighting, accessories, upholstery and style of seating. Nautical rope lights feature throughout and reaffirm the establishment’s connection to the sea.

The Snug

The snug situated between the main bar and Pier restaurant. We introduced glass doors to create visual links between clientele in the restaurant and the snug creating a more seamless and connected space. The snug bar was originally the main part of the old Hickeys pub and on many nights was home to traditional music and sing songs

To pay homage to the musical history, we designed specialist artwork prints displaying the lyrics of 3 songs; The Fields of Athenry, Green Fields of France and The West Clare Railway song. These are presented in large gilded frames with feature David Hunt pendant lights inset. We wanted this room to have a small hotel bar feel and introduced more sophisticated lighting and relaxing furniture to set this tone.

The Pier Restaurant

The Pier restaurant is located in the original section of the building so we introduced a period style decor to the interior finishes. We then added nautical inspired accessories to pay homage to it’s location and local fishing traditions.

The main feature in the restaurant is a scaled model of the interior of the traditional West Clare Currach from which we hung rope light fittings. These boats are native to the area and were traditionally used locally for fishing and are still used in the bay recreationally.

Vintage suitcases are presented throughout with antique oil lamps, shipping decanters and various sea inspired accessories, creating a nautical & travel themed space.
