Morrison’s Bar & Kitchen, Limerick

A modern bar and kitchen experience, designed to reflect the essence of the Morrison’s brand story.

Morrison’s Bar & Kitchen Ballysimon, Limerick was an institution in its own right, a busy local trade albeit in a very characterless and dated setting which let down the homely hospitality and service and offered little in terms of customer journey.

Tess Stanford Interior Design set out to create a destination Bar & Kitchen experience and to pay homage to the history and story of the Morrison’s brand brought about by 2020 Brand and Marketing Visionaries.

The interior is designed to tell that story. A snug bar marks the floor print of the original pub. Sandblasted wood, copper bar counter, distressed wallpaper tiles, tongue and groove timber paneling, leather upholstery in amongst an electric mix of antiques, set an aged tone almost as if it’s the original bar. The end result is a very modern tale of an old Irish snug.

As Interior designers we were careful to keep the homely feel whilst incorporating sporting memorabilia, very much a part of local Irish pubs, the bar area introduces aspects of sporting history yet in a very modern way. Iconic photography mixed with antique accessories and historical references of Guinness and other Irish traditional drink related photography reinforces the aged feel we aimed to achieve in this space.

Connecting seamlessly through to the lounge area, the customer journey leads to the Kitchen area which focuses primarily on the food trade. With this in mind, the space has been designed to reflect a country kitchen, with a homely, yet contemporary feel. As with the bar modern materials sit harmoniously with antique objects.

The abundant natural light here allows us to step away from the warm, dark traditional bar feel and step into a clean, modern and comfortable setting. Visual links of materials in each of the three spaces appear throughout. This helps the entire establishment feel as one yet each area has its own personality.

The exterior is a much cleaner attractive building with confident branding flanking the gable ends whilst facades and entrances designed to be more open and inviting.

As Morrison’s is a business with such a local trade with in the Limerick community, we felt it only right to source all materials, labour, furnishings and accessories close to home. In the end, we have created a very modern & functional establishment and yet it feels like it’s been here forever.
